Matcha Mondays

Overview

Matcha Mondays is a 4-week pottery course designed for tea lovers interested in creating their own traditional matcha tools. Whether you're new to clay or continuing your pottery journey, this hands-on class guides you through making a complete matcha set: a matcha bowl (chawan), a whisk holder (chasen kake), and a matcha canister (nakama). Over four weeks you'll learn wheel throwing, handbuilding, and glazing techniques, all while creating functional pieces you can use at home. Small class sizes (maximum 13 students) ensure personalized instruction and plenty of hands-on support. Classes meet Mondays from 6:30–8:00 PM, beginning February 2.

Refund Policy

Non-refundable 5 days before the start. A $25 cancellation fee applies before this. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is also enrolled in the course.

Attendance Policy

If you cannot attend a session, please email potterychicago@gmail.com before enrolling and we will inform you if a makeup option is available.

Course Schedule

1
Week 1 (Feb 2): The Matcha Bowl (Chawan)
Learn wheel-throwing fundamentals and create your primary matcha vessel.

Week 2 (Feb 9): Matcha Canister (Nakama)
Handbuild a traditional-style canister using coil-building techniques.
3
Week 3 (Feb 16): Whisk Holder (Chasen Kake)
Practice taller forms on the wheel to create a functional stand for your matcha whisk.
4
Week 4 (Feb 23): Glazing Session
Glaze all three pieces using food-safe options. Finished pieces will be ready approximately one week after glazing and will be held for 60 days after firing.
